Application Note Handling Aggressive Environments VLT® Drives and Controls Frequency Converters Frequency Converter Danfoss VLT® Drives Handling aggressive environments VLT® is a trademark of Danfoss A/S Handling aggressive environments s It pays to protect against harsh environments Electronic equipment is sensible to the environment, i.e. moisture, dust and temperature can influence the reliability of electronics. Reduced reliability causes downtime in the application with reduced earnings as a result. Therefore it is important to choose the right solution for the actual application. This instruction informs about the possibilities to protect a frequency converter and other electronic devices against influence from an environment where aggressive gasses and moisture are present. Basically it is important to protect the electronics from a harsh environment. The best way to do that, is to avoid the harsh environment by placing the electronics outside the h...

Application Note Back Plate VLT® Back plate to VLT® / HVAC/ AQUA Back plate to VLT® / HVAC/ AQUA VLT s Back plate to VLT Abstract: To ensure optimum cooling of the frequency converter, it is necessary to mount it on a solid wall or plate. If the frequency converter is mounted on a non solid surface, rails or a machine frame, it is necessary to use a backplate to guide the airflow over the heat sink. s Situation In the Operating Instructions, it is stated that some of the frequency converters have to be placed on a solid back plate or wall. The back plate or wall guides the air flow, generated by the fan on the top of the drive, over the heat sink. As illustrated in figure 1, false air is drawn in from the sides when the frequency converter is placed on rails. This reduces the efficiency of the heat sink dramatically. Fig. VLT mounted on rails and without a solid back plate to guide the airflow. s Solution One solution is to place a thin plate on the back of...

Application Note Choice of Prefuses VLT® VLT® HVAC FCM n Choice of Prefuses for VLT HVAC/FCM VLT / HVAC/FCM This statement are only valid for installations, which are made according to IEC (Electrical installations of buildings) and the harmonized documents in the HD series (colloquially according to European standards). UL and NEC standards are not discussed in this note. Fuses in front of a VLT must consider more different purposes: 1) Limit the heat generation inside the VLT at unit fault. 2) Protection of the mains cable. 3) Protection at ground fault, combined with unit fault in VLT. In the following the melt fuses will be indicated as follows: Operation class In terms of DIN VDE (IEC ), low-voltage high rupturing-capacity fuse links are classified in terms of their function and operating characteristics (also see Function class). The operation class of an LV HRC fuse link is indicated by letters, whereby the first letter is used to identify the function class and the s...
Application Note Dimensioning Cabinet Airflow for Cooling Frequency Converters VLT® VLT® VLT® FLUX VLT® HVAC VLT® AQUA Dimensioning cabinet airflow for cooling frequency converters n Introduction Frequency converters develop heat when they are operating. The heat loss depends on a number of factors: mains voltage, switch frequency, load, and motor cable length. The heat loss is typically 3-4 % of the nominal output power . This heat has to be transported away from the VLT to avoid overheating the VLT. The frequency converter removes the heat by forced convection via a fan in the drive. This heats up the air in the cabinet where the VLT is installed. External measures have to be taken to remove the heat from the cabinet. Some of the heat is transported through the walls of the cabinet. This portion can normally be neglected when dimensioning airflows for cooling frequency converters, as the heat transport capabilities of typical cabinets are less than W. The typical way to ...

Application Note VLT® on IT Mains VLT® VLT® HVAC VLT® on IT mains VLT on IT mains VLT® on IT mains When using VLT on IT mains (Insulation Terre) special care has to be taken. IT mains is a supply mains, where the star point in the supply transformer is floating to ground. As opposed to TN mains, a ground fault will not cause a fuse to blow. Units connected to such an IT mains must not trip when a ground fault occurs on the supply. The plant should be able to operate with one ground fault. Fig. 1: IT-system An "Insulation Monitoring Device" can be installed to monitor the system and to ensure that a ground fault is found and mended before a second ground fault occurs. An "Insulation Monitoring Device" will signal that a ground fault has been found in the system. Fig. 2: IT-system with "Insulation Monitoring Device" In IEC -3 ( ) (Adjustable Speed Electrical Power Drive Systems) several warnings are mentioned, which must be noticed (see copy page and 3).
